A synthetic compound that acts as a potent inhibitor of the enzyme $5\alpha$-reductase. It blocks the conversion of testosterone to the more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is used at different doses to treat BPH (by shrinking the prostate) and male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) by reducing DHT levels in the scalp.
